95 points – Maggy Hawk Pinot Noir Jolie 2022
Indeed, one of the prettiest wines of the four different wines Maggy Hawk makes from the same site, the 2022 Pinot Noir Jolie comes from the 58-acre Maggy Hawk estate planted to five different clones of Pinot. It is all red fruit and floral loveliness, higher in acidity than some of its sister wines, and aged in less new oak. The freshness is the star as much as the texture, bright and persistent on the palate in citrus peel and forest, and medium to light-bodied in style and substance. Enjoy through 2032.
95 points – Maggy Hawk Pinot Noir Unforgettable 2022
What winemaker Sarah Wuethrich calls a “Goldilocks” wine, the 2022 Pinot Noir Unforgettable Estate Vineyard doesn’t lead overtly into red fruit or overtly into black fruit, it goes right down the middle, with plenty of both cradled in just-enough, but without too much oak. Soft, juicy, lengthy, and spicy, it has great texture and medium-bodied finesse, with refined tannins to boot. This is a great wine that has years to go in bottle, through 2032-2037.
94 points – Maggy Hawk Pinot Noir Afleet 2022
Winemaking behind the 2022 Pinot Noir Afleet consists of 60% whole-cluster fermentation in the final blend, resulting in a lovely lift of tropical fruit and rustic tannin that frames the edges of the wine’s medium-bodied, juicy core. It builds cohesion and complexity as it opens, revealing layers of earthy forest, dried herb, and refined tannins. No new oak was used, so plenty of purity is on hand. Enjoy through 2032.
94 points – Maggy Hawk Pinot Noir Edmeades Vineyard 2022
Aged in 100% neutral puncheons, the 2022 Pinot Noir Edmeades Vineyard is made from heritage clones of Pinot Noir, most notably Calera, with 50% whole-cluster in 50% of the final blend. Edmeades has been an estate vineyard for Maggy Hawk since the beginning, bought by Jackson Family Wines in 1988. Fruit was brought in relatively early and winemaking kept minimalist in approach, allowing the soft, supple tannins to cradle a palate of crisp, crunchy cranberry and pomegranate fruit and lithe tannins. Cellar through 2032.
94 points – Maggy Hawk Chardonnay Skycrest Vineyard 2022
From the producer’s high-elevation estate vineyard, which grows both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and one of the largest vineyards in the Anderson Valley, the 2022 Skycrest Vineyard Chardonnay is aged in a mix of French and Austrian oak, never more than 25% new. Soft layers of pear, melon, and fig accent a medium-bodied palate of tremendous texture and refinement. Aging potential is at least 10 years.
93 points – Maggy Hawk Pinot Noir Stormin’ 2022
The heaviest, darkest, and most muscular of the four distinct Pinot Noirs made from the Maggy Hawk estate, the 2022 Pinot Noir Stormin leads with clone 777, exuding beautiful violet and blueberry aromas and flavors and buoyant acidity. The oak is 50% new and, while integrated, a bit more showy on the palate, adding notes of baking spice and toast. Still, this medium-bodied wine, while intense, is also complex and inviting and can easily be laid down for later, through 2032 if not more.
92 points – Maggy Hawk White Pinot Noir 2023
Given 10 months of aging in neutral 500-liter puncheons, grapes grown at the Maggy Hawk Estate Vineyard around the winery tasting room were used in the blend for the first time, the fruit farmed the way it would be for sparkling wine and picked around 20-21 Brix. Pressed gently, the 2023 White Pinot Noir was barrel fermented and aged and fully native this vintage. The result is an exceptionally fruity, sleekly textured white that offers broad swaths of watermelon rind, tart cherry, and plum that will pair well with a variety of foods. Fun and fruity, it can be enjoyed another 5-7 years.
90 points – Maggy Hawk White Pinot Noir Pet-Nat 2023
A white Pinot Noir turned into bubbles, the peach/orange-colored 2023 White Pinot Noir Pet-Nat sparkler is cloudy in the glass and offers aromas of fresh butter, radish, and wild strawberry. Fresh and refreshing, it’s best enjoyed soon after release and served cold.
