Biography

Leading the culinary team at Hula Grill Ka’anapali is Executive Chef Charlie Owen.  Originally from Kentucky, Charlie discovered his love of Hawaiian food and culture when he first moved to Maui in 2001.  He took a job at Mama’s Fish House and it is there that he fell in love with all Maui has to offer.  He has deep roots in farming and harvesting from land and sea, which results in innovative additions that keep in line with the restaurant’s menu featuring Hawaii Regional Cuisine.

Childhood for Charlie involved working after school at the family’s wholesale produce company and summers on the family farm.  Raising produce and harvesting livestock, fish and game were as much a part of Charlie’s upbringing as were long evenings together in the kitchen preparing food for the extended family of relatives and friends. It was during these years when Charlie learned the value of family and teamwork, a quality that would drive his success over the next several decades.

By the time he earned a degree in Culinary Arts from Sullivan University in Louisville, Kentucky, Charlie had already spent many years in professional kitchens.  He went on to refine his skills by working in Aspen’s top restaurants and working as a caterer and personal chef to a prominent Aspen/Memphis Family.  From there he would go on to win medals in multiple national competitions (sanctioned by the American Culinary Federation), while over-seeing food production at Yum! Brand’s Global headquarters.

And after a long stint away from Maui, Charlie and ohana are back, happily living in  Lahaina.   When not leading the kitchen at Hula Grill, Charlie enjoys family time and the simple pleasures of life on Maui.
